"After the torpedoing of HMCS Chebogue, Engine Room Artificer Winterton displayed gallantry in immediately inspecting the water-tightness of threatened compartments in the stern, when the ship was in imminent danger of sinking. He afterwards displayed outstanding skill and leadership in the performance of damage control duties. He performed these duties with zeal, patience and cheerfulness, setting an example of wholehearted devotion to duty, worthy of the highest traditions of the Canadian Naval Service."
